Church Description

Valley Presbyterian Church is located in a beautiful setting facing the Santa Rita Mountains to the southeast. The sanctuary can seat 750 worshipers with an overflow room behind that can be configured to accommodate more. The choir, some 100 in number, is comfortably seated behind the pulpit and organ console. The new organ, a top line instrument, was installed in December of 2000.

Considerable foresight was used in conceptual design and layout of the facilities in order to accommodate continued growth in the community and an expanding membership in the church. Six classrooms, a special area for both the chancel choir and bell choir with storage for music and paraphernalia, an area for the custodial staff, a fully equipped kitchen, private offices for the staff, general office areas and an attractive reception area were all provided in the original layout. The east tower contains a carillon which is programmed to sound hymnal music at certain hours.

The sanctuary with it’s grand piano and stage regularly hosts various musical performances of community interest.  Some of these are: The community concert series, University of Arizona Faculty Showcase performances, The Tucson Sunshine Chorus, Annual University of Arizona piano competition. Other meetings or special events of community interest are often convened at the church.

Special Interest Groups

There are a number of special interest groups such as; bowling leagues, theater and concert groups, travel, singles, bereavement classes and counseling and The Friendship Kettle. This last group schedules dinners once each month with the meal being prepared and served by the members of this group. The after dinner programs are varied but always of great interest.

Missions

Valley Presbyterian Church is strongly oriented toward missions, both local and world wide. In local missions the church was a leader in creating Casa de Esperanza which is an organization providing day care, a pre-school and child care program, recreation and social programs for seniors, after-school mentor programs, intergenerational programs, a 24 hour crisis intervention program, managed mental health, and a community meal program, among other services. We have provided financial support of more than $1,000,000 and countless hours of individual volunteer work.

The church helped create area hospices and continues to offer services where needed.

Following is a partial list of activities supported through monetary giving and volunteer involvement: Habitat for Humanity, Friends in Deed, Interfaith Volunteers, local hospices, Youth on Their Own, Green Valley Assistance Services, Presbyterian Border Missions, Shalom House and House of Neighborly Services and the food bank. The list is incomplete and ever changing. Working together, we will obey Christ’s command to minister to those in need.

Many of the social services in Green Valley had their beginning in Valley Presbyterian Church.
